Transgender people to gain inheritance rights in Bangladesh

Transgender rights in Bangladesh

Bangladesh’s law minister announces that Transgenders would soon be able to inherit or get a share in their family’s property.

Bangladesh, a country of 168 million people, is officially secular but property laws still follow Islamic laws that prevent Transgenders from inheriting property after the death of their parents or no share is given them in the property.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told a cabinet meeting this week that new inheritance laws were being drafted for Transgenders.

“We are trying to legislate in accordance with Islamic Sharia law and our own constitution to ensure property rights for Transgenders,” Law Minister Anisul Huq told Bangladeshi media.

The bill has yet to be approved by parliament but is likely to be passed by the legislature.

Bangladesh has allowed Transgenders to be identified as a separate gender since 2013. At the national level, the number of Transgenders is close to one and a half million.

Last year, Transgenders were also allowed to register to vote as a third party. Earlier this month, the first Islamic Madrisa for Muslim Transgenders was opened in Bangladesh.
